One morning,

Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary【超鲁汇;初中人教9年级Unit8】 school. She asked Ann if she could
keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.

Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.
Four years
later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley.
When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door
and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the

Ann found Jack suffering a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as
Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.

It was one
of those terribly hot days inBaltimore.
Needless to say, it was too hot to do anything outside. But it was also
scorching【超标本,超鲁汇】 in our apartment. This was
1962, and I would not live in a place with an air conditioner for another ten
years. So my brother and I decided to leave the apartment to find someplace
indoors. He suggested we could see a movie. It was a brilliant plan.
Movie
theaters were one of the few places you could sit all day and—most important—sit in air conditioning. In those
days, you could buy one ticket and sit through two movies. Then the theater
would show the same two movies again. If you wanted to, you could sit through
them twice. Most people did not do that, but the manager at our theater, Mr.
Bellow, did not mind if you did.
That
particular day, my brother and I sat through both movies twice, trying to
escape the heat. We bought three bags of popcorn and three sodas【超标本,超鲁汇】 each. Then, we sat and watched The Music Man followed by The Man
Who Shot Liberty Valance. We’d already seen the second movie once before. _It_had been at the
theater since January, because Mr, Bellow loved anything with John Wayne in it.
We left
theater around 8, just before the evening shows began. But we returned the next
day and saw the same two movies again, twice more. And we did it the next day进步网too. Finally, on the fourth day,
the heat wave broke. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
Still, to
this day I can sing half the songs in The Music Man and recite half of John
Wayne and Jimmy Stewart’s dialogue from The Man Who Shot Liberty
Valance! Those memories are some of the few I have of the heat wave of
1962. They’re really
memories of the screen, not memories of my life.

How fit are
your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the
case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it
lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree
toothbrush was exhibited at International Consumer Electronics Show inLas Vegasthis week. It
senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or
iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.
The
toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right(don’t forget the insides of the teeth!)

long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist
actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French
inventor. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
The
toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so
developers could, for instance【超鲁汇;初中人教9年级Unit13】, create a game controlled by your
toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters【超鲁汇;初中外研3年级上册Module 9;初中人教8年级下册Unit6】 among your

The kids in
this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in
huts【超鲁汇;高中人教7册Unit4】 made of sticks and mud. They have进步网no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can
make words.
The key to
their success: 20 tablet computers(平板电脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S. group
called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is
to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no
schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology
researchers analyzing the project data say they’re already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already
learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt
Keller, who runs the Ethiopia program. 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
The fastest
learner—and the first
to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The device’s camera was disabled to save
money, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the
camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment inEthiopia.
With his
tablet, Kelbesa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English
animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable, ” said Keller.
The project
aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,” where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English,
which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.
62. How does
theEthiopiaprogram benefit the kids in the village? 来源进步网www.szjjedu.com
A. It trains teachers for them. B. It contributes to their
self-study
C. It helps raise their living
standards. D. It provides funds
for building schools
63. What can
we infer from Keller’s words in Paragraph 3?
A. They need more time to analyze data.
B. More children are needed to for the
research.
C. He is confident about the future of the
project.
D. The research should be carried out in
kindergartens.
64. It amazed
Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could_______.
A. learn English words quickly B. draw pictures of animals
C. write letters to researchers D. make phone calls to his

65. What is
the aim of the project?

[1] Nowadays the cost of a new car has
fallen in real terms so that it is cheaper than ever to own one, and better
road conditions have also attracted more drivers. The result is overcrowding on
the road system, which is one of the problems the local governments are faced
with.
[2] When people travel to other towns, the
problem might be relieved by getting them to park outside the town. Buses could
be provided to take them to the centre. These Park and Ride projects are
increasingly popular in theUK.

way of ________________________. Road taxes tend to mean that people use their
cars less. Fining drivers who are in areas where cars have been banned can also
tend to leave their cars behind.
[5] However, one thing has to be got right
for any solution to succeed. If we expect people to give up the habit of
driving, we must give them an alternative they can rely on. Constant delays,
unannounced changes to the timetable and sudden cancellations【cancel为初中、高中课表词汇及鲁汇】 all discourage people
